Announcing the Top 100 Global Universities to Obtain Public Service Patents in the United States in 2019


TAMPA, Florida, June 2, 2020 / PRNewswire / – The 2019 World Top 100 Universities With Service Patents In The United States Report was released today by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO). The report uses data obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and highlights the vital role that patents play in academic research and innovation.

Published annually since 2013, the report ranks the top 100 universities named as the first assignee of utility patents granted by the USPTO in calendar year 2019. The full report is available here.

There are 57 NAI member institutions represented in the Top 100 this year. They hold a total of 4,685 patents covering a wide variety of fields, such as medicine, technology and engineering. The IPO’s Top 300 Patent Owners List, published annually since 1985, ranks organizations around the world that have received the most U.S. utility patents in the previous calendar year. This year’s patent report 2019 has been released May 18, 2020. It lists the total number of patents for the top 100 universities of 2019 (including U.S. and international universities) at 7,873, an increase of 1,046 patents from the previous year.
